Now, the tree is exposed perfectly, but not so much the ground between you and the water. 
If you had held something over the flash to deflect it downwards or block it, then it may be more evenly lit. If you had a tripod handy then I'd have suggested a smaller aperture to have more of the scene in focus, but I can understand the desire not to lug one around on your holiday.
