At last, I have finally made up my mind and after months of research, pages and pages of reviews, help and advice from the friendly folk here on dA, I have acquired the:
I definitely needed the longer focal length, and apparently this baby is sharper than the 400mm prime! Certainly is sharper than the 70-200mm + 2x Extender.
Edit: See my gallery for the most recent photos from the new lens. All comments, suggestions and advice gratefully recieved.
Thanks mate. I will, hoping the IS will help, but bought a monopod as well. Should do the trick, my old tripod is shakier than I am the morning after a big night hehe.
If I get rid of the 75-300 after I upgrade I'm just going to give it to someone for a very (and I mean, very) small fee. I'd hate to see someone make the same mistake that I made when I was a n00b, and pay $200+ for one. They're just not worth it.
Another thing I could do is chop it in half...

Although refusal may offend, if you don't ask you won't get accepted.
Tell you what... cut one of them @ 75mm, and the other @ 300mm and then compare.
I was going to say to get through an internet dealer. Cameras Direct set up a store at BCG digital meeting sometimes, so it's not like some other stores that are completely web-only. But, what you lose in price you gain in service and assurance should something go wrong. I've heard stories where if you take a malfuntioning item back to PC with their receipt they'll replace it there and then.

Uploaded a couple of bird shots to shot the sharpness at 400mm. Let me know what you think.
I may have a ritual burning of my 75-300 on the barbie this weekend
